Insta Classics: Savannah Jones on Classical Piano and Instagram
BYU piano-performance grad student Savannah Jones shares her love of classical music on Instagram with a worldwide audience of more than 53,000 people, many of them young people like her. Jones started her account, @sav.plays.piano, because she wanted to connect with other musicians. Life as a pianist requires a lot of practice time and can be lonely. Instagram became a place where Jones could perform in a more casual setting than a recital or an audition and where she could find other musicians.
Online, Jones educates aspiring musicians with day-in-the-life-of-a-music-student videos, tips on posture for pianists, and jokes about her favorite practice fuel (Nerds Gummy Clusters). When she injured her right hand, she opened up about her recovery process, during which she learned and performed left-hand-only pieces.
Overall, Jones wants to inspire people to embrace classical music—whether that is by practicing more, going to a symphony, or simply listening to a piece they’ve never heard before.
In the video, Jones performs an excerpt from Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat Major by Frédéric Chopin. Read more about Jones in “Insta Classics,” published in the summer 2023 issue of Y Magazine: https://magazine.byu.edu/article/insta-classics/.
